What is an Italian Fiscal Code?
An Italian Fiscal Code in Italy is known as a Codice Fiscale but also known as a Tax Code, which is a government identification number comprised of letters and numbers on the basis of your first and last name, place/date of birth. It is used by the public administration to identify citizens, residents, and students, as well as to process visa requests, open a bank account, buy a house, purchase a car or invest.
How to get a Codice Fiscale
Attach colored copies of Passport and Drivers License/ID. Some Italian Embassies may require additional documents for proof of address such as, car insurance policy card, utility bill, etc..
WARNING: All documents must have the exact same spelling of your name and address and also be saved as a PDF format.

Can anyone get an Italian Fiscal Code?
Search your nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate website. If there’s a search bar within the website home page, type “fiscal code” and click search, it should take you to the appropriate page with an email address to send the request. You can also search for a “Patronato” near you, which is essentially a Patronage with power of representation.
How much does it Cost?
It’s free. However, there are some that may charge you a service fee to request a fiscal code on your behalf. Remember to always keep a paper trail of payments, which paying with a credit/debit card would be best.
A TIP to reduce headaches
Register for a Certified Email. The most common provider in Italy is a PEC (Posta Elettronica Certificata). Other providers can be found on the internet according to your preference and budget. Unfortunately, there is a cost to sign up, which ranges from 5 to 40 euros. It’s a small price to pay to reduce hearsay and bureaucracy but I’m certain you’ll thank me later.
